1. Business Start-Up Lessons
Learning goal: Know the difference between start-up costs, revenue, per-sale contribution and net profit before committing money to a business.
Step 1 — Estimate start-up costs
List one-time costs (supplies, initial inventory, equipment, permits, initial website setup) separately from ongoing monthly costs (hosting, replenishment, insurance, storage, advertising). Research rules and permit requirements where your business operates; costs vary by location.
Equipment $120 + opening inventory $200 + packaging $60 + permits and setup $70 = $450 estimated one-time costs. If ongoing expenses are $55 per month, the founder needs money for both the launch and continuing operations.
Step 2 — Set a price using real costs
Sales revenue is money collected before costs. Contribution per order is revenue per order minus variable costs such as product, packaging, shipping and applicable transaction fees. Net profit accounts for additional overhead, labor, taxes and other expenses. A positive sale does not always mean a profitable business.
Sell an item for $20. Product and packaging $7; seller-paid shipping $4; payment fees $1. Contribution is $8 per order before advertising, rent, labor and taxes. At 30 sales, $240 contribution still needs to cover those other expenses.
Step 3 — Keep records
Save purchase and sales receipts, record transaction dates, describe what was bought or sold, and keep business activity separate from personal spending. Reconcile records against statements regularly. Specific tax recordkeeping requirements differ by jurisdiction.
- Write down your planned product and who would buy it.
- List at least five start-up expenses.
- Calculate your per-sale contribution using the real costs you expect.
- Decide what you need to track after every sale.
Check your understanding: $300 sales versus $180 product costs
The difference is $120 before any unlisted shipping, transaction fees, labor, overhead or taxes. Do not call $120 net profit until the remaining costs are considered.

2. Entrepreneurship Workshop
Learning goal: Test one business idea before investing heavily. This guided at-home exercise provides structured practice; it does not include a live instructor or individual feedback.
Part A — Define the customer and the problem
Complete this sentence: “I help [specific customer] solve [specific problem] with [product/service].” Make the customer group specific enough that you can find and speak with them.
Part B — Test demand
- Identify three competing or alternative ways customers currently solve the problem.
- Speak to five potential customers without asking them to share private financial information.
- Ask about their current solution, frustrations, buying criteria and willingness to try an alternative; do not pressure them for a yes.
- Compare your estimated delivered price against alternatives, including shipping or service fees.
Part C — Draft a simple sales plan
| Question | Your working answer |
|---|---|
| Who is the customer? | ____________________ |
| What problem do you solve? | ____________________ |
| What is your offer and price? | ____________________ |
| Where will customers find you? | ____________________ |
| What are your per-sale costs? | ____________________ |
| What is your 30-day test goal? | ____________________ |
An entrepreneur considers selling locally grown flower-seed packets. Before buying 500 envelopes, they compare packet size, total price including shipping, demand for the variety, packaging costs and whether their harvest can support repeat orders. They start with a small trial batch, track results, and only then consider expansion.
Practice answer: Is “Everyone needs this!” a useful customer definition?
No. Start with a focused group and evidence of an actual problem. For example: “Home gardeners looking for locally harvested flower seeds with clear growing instructions.”
3. Planning Templates
Use these beginner templates as a starting point. You can copy the column headings into a notebook or spreadsheet, duplicate the rows as needed, and update them after each transaction. They are not a substitute for professional bookkeeping, legal, or tax advice.
Template A — Start-Up Budget
| Expense | One-time or monthly? | Estimated $ | Actual $ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supplies / equipment | One-time | ____ | ____ |
| Inventory / materials | One-time | ____ | ____ |
| Permits / registration | As applicable | ____ | ____ |
| Web tools / subscriptions | Monthly | ____ | ____ |
| Other | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Template B — Sales and Expense Register
| Date | Item / purpose | Sale in $ | Expense out $ | Receipt / order ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Template C — Inventory Tracker
| Product | Opening units | Units added | Units sold / used | Closing units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Inventory formula: Closing units = opening units + units added − units sold or used. Record damaged or spoiled inventory separately so counts stay accurate.
Template D — Monthly Sales Forecast
| Month | Expected orders | Average revenue / order | Expected revenue | Expected contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | ____ | ____ | Orders × revenue/order | Orders × contribution/order |
| Month 2 | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Create a 30-day budget for a business idea. Enter estimated and actual costs. Record one example sale and one expense, then calculate your forecast. Revise your numbers as you learn more.
4. Intro to Coding
Learning goal: Understand the roles of the three core technologies used in many webpages. You do not need prior coding experience.
Provides headings, paragraphs, links, forms and meaningful page elements.
Controls colors, spacing, typography, and how layouts adapt to screens.
Handles interactions such as responding to a button click or calculating a value.
Use clear headings, readable contrast, descriptive links and keyboard-friendly controls.
Read your first HTML
<h1>Welcome to My Page</h1> <p>I am learning to build websites.</p> <button type="button">Say Hello</button>
What happens? The browser displays a large heading, a paragraph and a button. A plain button does nothing special until behavior is added.
Make a visual change with CSS
h1 {
color: #8b6924;
font-size: 32px;
}
Add simple JavaScript behavior
document.querySelector("button")
.addEventListener("click", function () {
alert("Hello, future builder!");
});
Knowledge check: Which language changes a heading's color?
CSS. HTML defines the heading; JavaScript can change its appearance dynamically, but CSS is the normal starting point for visual styling.
Practice: Change the sample heading text, pick a different CSS color, and explain what the click handler does. You can test the code in a local HTML file or a trusted online code editor; no service is required to read this lesson.
5. Build Your First Website
Learning goal: Create a simple single page website, understand the difference between writing code and publishing it, and practice basic accessibility and privacy safeguards.
What do I use? Use the free Coding Studio farther down this page. It has three boxes: HTML for words and headings, CSS for colors and design, and JavaScript for interactive buttons. You do not need Microsoft Word or a paid program.
- Scroll down to Coding Studio: Build Your Website.
- Tap the HTML box and change the sample heading and introduction.
- Tap the CSS box and change a color. Leave JavaScript as it is for now.
- Tap Run my code to see your website in the Working preview.
- Tap Download my website to save your HTML file. If downloading is blocked, use Copy website code and save it as index.html in a text editor.
- Open your saved HTML file in a browser. To publish it for everyone, you will need website hosting.
Free Lesson: Publish Your Website
Learning goal: Turn the website you build in DaLegendary1 Coding Studio into a public website people can visit. Your starter template and HTML download are free. Publishing is a separate step, and a custom domain is optional.
- Create: Open Coding Studio below. Start with the free My First Website template already provided.
- Customize: Edit the HTML, CSS and JavaScript to add your own words, design, pictures, links or interactive features. Images hosted elsewhere require publicly accessible image links.
- Preview: Tap Run my code to see your changes. Test buttons and links before sharing.
-
Download: Tap Download my website. Save the HTML file, then rename it
index.htmlif needed. Keep a backup of your code. -
Publish for free with Netlify: Visit Netlify Drop. Put your
index.htmlfile in a folder and upload that folder using Netlify Drop. Follow the provider instructions to get a public website address. An account or sign in may be required to manage the site. - Check your published site: Open its new public address on another device, test the buttons and images, and share the link. To make changes later, edit your code and deploy the updated files again.
What can you build? A personal portfolio, an author page, a simple business introduction, an event page, or a working calculator. This starter creates a single page website. Customer logins, payments, databases and online store checkouts require additional tools or services.
Another free hosting option: GitHub Pages can host a static website, but requires a GitHub account and repository setup. Free hosting limits and terms may change.
Remember: Downloading makes a usable website file. Publishing makes that website accessible on the internet. You do not need to buy a template from DaLegendary1 Academy.
Starter website file
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>My First Website</title>
<style>
body { font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
max-width: 700px; margin: 40px auto;
padding: 0 20px; line-height: 1.6; }
h1 { color: #85651e; }
a { color: #174d85; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Welcome to My Website</h1>
<p>I built this page myself.</p>
<h2>About this project</h2>
<p>Describe what you offer here.</p>
<a href="https://example.com">Example link</a>
</body>
</html>
Before sharing your website
- Use a unique page title and descriptive link text.
- Check text contrast and readable font sizes.
- Do not put passwords, secret keys, private customer details or payment-card numbers in page code.
- Only collect visitor information if needed; use appropriate privacy notices and secure services.
- Understand that domains and hosting are separate from the webpage file and may have recurring costs.
Knowledge check: Does saving index.html make it publicly available?
No. A local HTML file works on your device. To make the site available to the public, it needs hosting and a public address; a custom domain is optional but often useful.
